Clive Lutley

As a contemporary artist and sculptor, I live and work in Harthausen/Friedberg (Bavaria).
I was born in 1954 in Plymouth on the southwest coast of England and have lived in Bavaria since 1984, where I have found a new home and extended my family. Since then, this picturesque region has been an important source of inspiration for my work.
After nearly ten years of service in the British Army, my professional career led me into the rapidly developing IT industry. About 25 years ago, I rediscovered painting as a creative outlet, having first experimented with oil painting as a teenager, inspired by my uncle Harry Collins.
I am largely self-taught, but I have furthered my artistic development through
various art courses, including those taught by the Austrian artist Walter Strobl.
My primary focus is on oil painting. Over the years, however, I have incorporated other media such as acrylics, airbrushing, and a foray into encaustic painting. In addition, I create sculptures from various materials, particularly metal.
In addition to representational works, I also create narrative and abstract pieces.
Growing up in Plymouth in the 1950s gave me an early appreciation not only for the incredible power and beauty of the sea, but also for the extraordinary—literally fabulous—natural beauty of Dartmoor. It was undoubtedly here that I developed my conviction about how important an intact natural environment is for the world we live in, and how disastrous the exploitation of nature for profit is.
The beauty and diversity of nature—with landscapes and seascapes inspired in part by my travels—as well as themes such as environmental destruction and humanity’s relationship with the environment are recurring motifs in my work.
These themes ran like a common thread through my first major solo exhibition,
“Clive Lutley A Journey,” at the Aichach Town Hall (2025)

This was followed by:
Participation at the Aichach Art Mile 2026
Metal sculpture “Space OddYouSee”

Aichach Art Association Members’ Exhibition (2026)
Metal sculpture…. during installation
